Spear and Rungu Throwing
Aug 19th, 2011 at 2:06pm

I found this very interesting video that shows Maasai tribesmen throwing spears and Rungu's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOAYDKIoziU

I never heard of the Rungu before, its some sort of wooden throwing club with a ball at the end.
I was amazed by how far they can throw them.

I am going to try this out  Wink

Seen this one a while ago and also enjoyed the rungu very much. That much that i've made one,but probably the stone I used was too heavy,i can't throw it too far.

The Rungu is an African version of a rabbit stick as far as shape, the Rungu is used in combat and incendentally for hunting, the reverse is true for the rabbit stick.  Notice the way it is thrown, can that motion be adapted to a side arm throw?  Bill

Some of the throwing technique looks a bit strange, but you can't argue with the results. Id love to see some of our athletes go up against them.

Can't argue with those reasults. I imagine they are using a very hard desert hardwood that is dence and narrow so there is very little air resistance. I might try making one of those from some kind of hickory, I have done many rabbit sticks but I havn't really expierimented with the ball headed kind, definitely some kind of physics going on there.

Wow and their friends just stand at the receiving end. Bravery or insanity?

Rungu- reminds me of 'potato masher'.

I watched in complete awe at these guys so casually hurling these things into the next county.

Obviously these Rungu would destroy any native North American small game on impact. But I wonder if one of these guys threw a Rungu at a white tail deer from say 25-30 meters if it would kill it? Man...that is just so unbelievably far for what seems like a non-airfoil throwing stick.

No I seriously doubt that. But certainly a deadly weapon all the same.
