Todays points, first attempts at 2 ishi points!
Aug 12th, 2011 at 6:25pm

Here's what I made today, I started knapping a magnifying glass having never tried that before, but I found it tricky for some reason to get long flakes off of and after working it down for some time I ended up with a long skinny point that I decided to try making my first ever ishi point from with a teardrop notch.  Having never done a teardrop notch and definitely needing a finer pointed notching tool so I can stop clipping the points of the notching widening the entry...grr...I think I did a decent job I guess.  The other ishi point, (my favorite even though the entry is pretty wide on this one,) is one I made from a rainbow obsidian slab I was sent by Shoalhunter as part of a pith trade.  I had never worked a slab before but I didn't find I had any problems with working one, when I got it all cleared with flakes on both sides it just looked right for an ishi point like from the magnifying glass so I went for it with that one as well.

Let me know what you think of em, any tips on doing the teardrop notching would be great!

And a special THANKS to SHOALHUNTER of http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com for the rainbow obsidian slab!

Man that is some nice work. I'm wanting to learn napping myself but have to figure out a couple things first.  1) How to obtain tools with little or no money. 2) what stones would be workable in this area.

Amaizining to me that every rockhound in this area seems to think that only dark English flint can be worked.

Luke you have really mastered this art. Man I am so impressed with your work. That is just mind blowing bro. Good job. The ultimate test though would be to take them on a hunting trip.  Smiley

The trick with the ishi points is the teardrop notching.  It is narrow on entry and then expands into a teardrop shape, to do that I have to use a narrow notching tool, first make the narrow entry and then come in on an angle and remove a flake from each side then one from the end, then one from each side and one from the end and on and on, it is very easy to break off one of the ears of the narrow entry portion.  I actually did on the obsidian one, it was a much narrower entry but the point wasn't as thin at the notching as I wanted so I had to apply a lot of pressure to remove a flake and after a flake peeled off I was pushing so hard I slipped and busted the entry wider.
I'm sure I will get a lot better at it as these are only my first 2 with a teardrop notch.

If you make your notching tool flat and shaped like a screw driver blade, then one chip, turn over two chips, turn over, three chips ect.  The trick is to get the point really thin and to use a hard surface to support the point while punching your flakes.  Bill

I have never tried a paddle shaped notcher.  I don't use a punch but just a pressure flaker with a narrower tip.
