2-stranded Rockman?

So I'm digging through the pictures thread (awesome time killer) and I ran across some variations of the Rockman sling unknown to me at the time. I'm curious what builders/users have to say about this minimal variation of the Rockman? From what I can tell its made from only 2-strands or cordage, generally thicker then what would normally be used for a woven sling, with a simple 4 strand round braid after folding the 2 strands in the middle to from the finger loop. This seems like it would be good with Para-cord but has anyone tried it yet?

I'm not a great sling maker by any means and have only made one woven sling of the Dan Bollinger variety, but I might try my hand at this one next. I might gut the para-cord and use the inner cordage to do the weaves and wraps for the finger-loop/pocket but I'm not sure how the round braid will turn out using gutted para-cord? It seems everyone loves a good Rockman sling so I might give it a whirl.

you can use paracord to make the 2 strand, although i would gut the cords so that it wouldn't be too heavy. the round braid will work perfectly fine when gutted. just make sure that you have one end of the sling (probably the finger loop) pegged down or hanging against something. if the cords are slack then the braid will come out uneven.

i'm not so sure about weaving the pouch with the guts. IMO it would make the pouch and loop flimsy feeling, rather than solid if it was woven from the outer 32. you might not care, and others might disagree, but in my opinion the thin stuff wouldn't be as good.

if your good at braiding, you might want to take a third shorter piece of paracord and fold it in half. when you've braided most of the retention cord until your an inch from where you want your pouch to begin, take your third piece and put it behind the braid and continue braiding around the third strand. when your at the pouch you will now have 3 strands to work with rather than two, making a wider pouch like a full sized rockman, while still maintaining the lighter and thinner size.

Thanks xxkid123, I'll keep all that in mind. I might get some free time this weekend to have a go at it. Not much of a weaver or braider that's kinda why the 2-strand idea is so appealing to me. My Bollinger style sling left much to be desired as far as craftsmanship, so we'll see how far my limited skill-set can get me. I just want a new sling to use on vacation this fall. If all else fails I can make a simple solid pouch para-cord sling. Great hobby, slinging.

I really thinks 2-strand Rockman sling is a good idea. It should be fine, if substantial, with un-gutted paracord. Even the pouch. I do not think gutting and inner strands would be all thar nice.
Adding a strand to each pouch half makes a wider pouch, and is a good idea, but if it is to be kept simple the narrow pouch works fine too.

I've made many of them and the dog leashes I'm currently using are of that design. It's an excellent design. If you try it you'll like it. It's quicker, easier, just as strong, and you can make four different designs in the cords with the braid if you use two different color cords... there are no bad points to it. I wish I had some pictures of one to post for you. I NEVER make rockmans the old way anymore.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Does anyone have a good formula for how much length of cord you need for x-size sling for the 2-stranded Rockman? I don't have an excessive amount of para-cord right now to experiment. Maybe I'll try with some jute to get an idea as well as practice this method a bit before diving in with my more expensive para-cord. I might gut a small piece to get a feel for how I want to construct the full sling, gutted or un-gutted as well as I don't think I'll have enough to try both.

Rat Man - Your statement of NEVER making a Rockman any other way is an encouraging thought. I'd love to see pics of some 2-stranded Rockmans, I think the only one I've found is from xxkid123 here:

These are the only pictures I have of any four strand work, so here they are. This is a small four strand Rockman made of jute and green nylon. It's a little rough looking but it was a nice sling.

The leash is made of nylon and has held up well. It's still like new. It's put together like a Rockman sling. The handle is where the pouch would be, sort of.

It was made from dollar store polypropylene. It wore out in like two weeks. Again, I made these a while back. The newer stuff looks MUCH better.

I had no 2-strand rockman with full size pouch in my collection, so I made this one from 3 mm hemp, stuff which must be braided if it is to be used in a sling. Nice sling if used with big, heavy stones.
Not good with tennis-, golf balls or puny pebbles in a sling like this Wink

I added some braided pieces of paracord, just to compare. I braided pieces in and out of it just to see the effect. Should make a fine and incredibly strong sling, as a single strand of paracord is more than adequate to do the job

I have a few very similar to that one in size. The ones I currently have are made from polypropylene though. As you say, it's a good design for heavy projectiles. Also they're almost indestructable.

Reply #14 - Aug 15^th, 2011, 6:30pm My current main sling (actually not so main seeing that I'm mostly using a lighter Apache which is much better for carry) is made like he one above, 8 strands of thick 5 ply jute. Tons of fun.
