You can put the taper on with a file or a horseshoeing rasp (looks like a file but with bigger, nastier teeth. Removes a doo-doo load of wood in a hurry! and skin, if you're not careful).

In fact, that's how I build my foreshafts. I clam the business end in a vice, with the butt sticking up. Make your you're clamping the untapered portion of the shaft, and not the point!

Then work it over from the butt towards the point with the file/rasp. I think these would make awesome foreshafts. What type of wood did you use?

Nice, what I do with mine is carve or rasp down a portion of the handle from a little below the hafting to about 3/4in. or more from the base of the handle, then I wrap it with twine and put a coating of varnish or wood glue on the wrapping.  Makes em'look really nifty that way.
