Help on recreating a replica Balaeric sling
May 24th, 2011 at 4:05am

Hey guys!
I recently became interested in the Balaeric slingers of ancient history. From what I've read they used rushes to create their slings. Can anyone explain to me the creation process if I want to make a replica? Do I locate some needle grass, let it dry out, and then braid three seperate grass stems together? I can't imagine that would make it thick enough. Also, if anyone has any info on the Balaeric slings that would be great! For example, did they use leather pouches or split pouches?
Thanks in advance,
Tony

hey tony, welcome to the forum, the best source of material for making a balearic sling is to use good quality sisal string; its a light creamy white from personal experience, and is composed of the fibres from the agave sisiliana plant, which i've found to be the most associated plant to use when making the balearic slings, however, a lot of other stuff may be substitued, that may range from any fibrous material (i've used a lot of hemp string to make a few) to cotton.
also, balearics are often made in five plait, instead of three, its not very complicated, they're actually both quite similar, however i recomend that you read some of the posts from this site:        http://www.seekyee.com/Slings/howtos.htm       just go to the 5 strand braid section.

also, heres a post that i began that has some good info in it; http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1301613713/0
i hope you can find something informative in the vastness of interweb space. good luck.

They use Slings with gap.

I make them with pleasure from hemp or sisal.

Thank you. I learnt the ready of a Balearic Sling last year in Spain.
Even if these Sling are very simply built, however, they are very actual.

If one works with sisal, one should process the sisal wet. Thus the lichens become much tauter. Nevertheless, remains the Sling very movable and elastic.
