Probably tangential, but an interesting case of battlefield archaeology:

heard this on the news yesterday.

Looking at the pics of found objects I believe I have an alternative theory to a pitched battle.

The facts:
1) horses involved
2) people falling off horses
3) long handled clubs

...

This wasn't a battle this was the worlds first/last extreme polo tournament !

The ball game played by southeastern Native Americans was a ritualized form of warfare.  Games between provinces or villages usually had fatalities.  This game became lacrosse.  Do you think that type of warfare became polo?  Bill

Let me clarify my last post, a lot of what we think of today as games have their roots in warfare, the Olympics were origonally to show how good your warriors were.  Do you think the practice sessions could have evolved into polo or something like that?  You are practicing riding around hitting people in the head with a mallet, did they practice by hitting a rock or stump and somebody bet that one group could hit it more often than the other group?  Bill

Polo is an ancient Iranian sport that came to Britain through India AFAIK. I agree with your idea that a lot of sports started as a competition imitating or replacing war, but I don't think Polo is the right sport in this instance.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

The Persians get the credit because of a game they played in 600bc against the Turkumen, most think it started in central Asia/northern China about 1000 years earlier, as training for light cavalary.  Bill
