Wow, that's a really nice one!  Does it have a hole drilled in it anywhere?  I notice most of the artifacts I've seen do, if not I guess that would have been hafted the same a flint point.

Is the top ground or is it broken?  If it is broken, it might have broken at the holes or at the edge of the handle while it was being used.  Stone tools have a lot of strength when you are cutting but you have to watch that you don't get the wrong angle because it will snap in a heartbeat.  And never pry with a stone blade.  Bill

Yeah, as long as a stone point is straight it is very strong as long as the pressure is against the edge or the point, but once the pressure is against one of the sides it will break very easily due to the thinness and also the leverage.  I do a lot of flintknapping and I have to say that a slate blade is wayyyy stronger than a flint one, though not at all as sharp as a flint one.  I read though that the slate ones were used for weapons where a long point that would take abuse was needed, like on the end of a thrusting spear or harpoon as an alternative to bone or antler.

I found with my slate knife that when the edge gets a little bunged, it cuts well still, the crumbly bits are bonus serrations.  Also, it can be sharpened finer and finer with smoother sharpening stones.  Try sharpening your brown knife on a smoother stone, or a piece of porcelain and might not be a waste, after all.  After a lot of sharpening my black slate knife got very sharp, I cut polypropyline twine with it the other day.

Have you seen pics of the chinese slate daggers?

No, I haven't.  I will have to go check that out!  I'm beginning to suspect that the slate I have is also a little brittle from being on the beach too long exposed to the elements, I know salt water makes quartzite more brittle as I can't knap quartzite cobbles from the beach very well as it tends to chunk rather than flake, but from a lake or a woods it will fake more properly.

That depends on the quartzite, grain size has a lot to do with being able to knap.  The smaller the grain, the better it will knap.  80%+ of the stone artifacts around me are made of Tallahatta Quartzite, they were made with quartzite cobbles as hammer stones.  The hammer stones are much coaser, the grains are about 1/2 the size of a BB.  Bill

Most pieces of slate aren't very good anyway.  Took me a while to find pieces that didn't break easily.  I picked up ~25 rocks, but only took three home.  I was in a vacant lot, a mile from the ocean.

How would roofing slate work for grinding into a blade? I've collected some pieces but haven't had the time to mess with them.

I'd say the material was too soft. I've made several slate knoves and whenever I run into a problen like this, I put a slightly hight angle on the edge and it seems to help. A nice thin edge is fantastic to behold as long as the slate will allow it, but sometimes adjustments need to be made to the original plans

here are a few of my recent slate knives. they're loosely modeled after ones used by the paleoindians of Greenland.

Ever since I saw ground slate knives and point in a museum in Finland, I have been enthralled with them. I'll try to find the link and post it here.
