MAQUAHUITL (Aztec Sword)
Sep 8th, 2010 at 9:38pm

not long ago Aztec (Caleb) and i went in together and purchased some obsidian blades from our friend Jim Winn (Paleoknapperjim on Paleoplanet) for the express purpose of making some authentic maquahuitl. lucky for us he just happened to have a box laying around. Caleb's blades are still in transit, so i'm jumping the gun a little here, but i just couldn't resist! 34 1/2'' long, 6'' at the widest, and around 1'' thick. made from 'redheart', a tree native to central and southern Mexico. smoked obsidian blades set with PPG. i'm planning on wrapping the handle with hand twisted rafia, but i thought i'd show it as is first.

Chris

Very nice!  I have got to make one of those, after I do a couple of ax handles fo a friend.  And, after I do a Mississippian style club.  And after I do some bone hair pins for a friend of a friend and some bone needles for sombody else.  Then theres that "W" word that keeps taking all my time...sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day.  Anyways, that is some great work and I wouldn't hide any of that pretty wood.  Bill

Nice, a different shape than the other ones I've seen people make.  The raffia would be a nice touch!  If I were you though I would try and get a hold of some sort of fur that you could make into imitation jaguar and incorporate that into the handle, that would be AWESOME!  And it's probably not authentic but what if you put an obsidian knife blade in the pommel for a ripper?

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.&&&&Remember - You are unique.............just like everybody else.

I assume the obsidian edges are easily exchangable.

i guess this qualifies as a maquahuitl, though i'm just calling it a war club. the wood is purpleheart and the blades are alligator gar scales.
