I buy quite often over the internet. If they are companies I don't know I make the effort to check them out, but so far I've not had a problem even with 'one off' purchases from fairly obscure places.

from reputable companies buying online is considerably safer than using a card in a shop or over a phone.

Online companies have pretty comprehensive securities and guarentees. gas stations, supermarkets and restaurants do not.

At any point where another human being handles your card there is a risk of card cloning. Online buying is waay safer.

I only use cash unless I'm buying online and I buy an awful lot of stuff online.

I buy all the time.   Books, CDs, bike parts, musician supplies, Xmas gifts...  Can't say we've ever had a problem.   My wife orders stuff from catalogues frequently; never a problem with credit cards or anything else.

I've only ever bought from established companies online, like Bass Pro Shops or Barnes and Nobel.  Like you, I also don't trust it.  I like to be sure I can return something if necessary.  I'm not saying that I'll never buy something online from a person, I just haven't done it yet because I'm unsure as to how safe it is.

Its for when stores don't have whatever item your looking for, so your forced to buy it online. Other than that I don't see the point in waiting 2 weeks for something to come in the mail when you can just get it at the store.

If you are buying throwing knives or axes e-mail me. I am a thrown weapons instructor who buys a lot off the web. I can advise you on quality goods at good prices from reputable merchants.

my sleep is precious, i'm not waiting in a massive line at 2 am for some new thing that just came out at an outrageous price, cheaper and usually on stock.

There are times when you can find deals where shipping charges are free, and the online price is significantly lower than you find in a store. Also, a lot of the time, shipping done via UPS takes a lot less than two weeks. More like 3-5 days.

I haven't been buying a lot online lately (finances have me curtailing the spending I used to do on "gimmees"), but I have bought a LOT of stuff that way since my very first time in 2000.

It's very true that you can often track down items you simply cannot find in local stores. Try finding a local store that carries a decent variety of Spyderco knives, for example. Even if you find the model you want, it's probably at a gun shop that gouges you on the price.

i buy a lot of my raw materials through the internet. whenever possible, use paypal instead of giving your card number directly. this gives you a security buffer and a number of options should something go south. i've only had one bad experience doing business over the web and that was as a seller, not a buyer, and was my own fault for trusting the wrong person.
