Prefered primitive axe hafting meathod
Jul 12th, 2010 at 9:44am

1. Well I visited Lake Superior recently and came to a beautiful beash with thousands of golf ball sized, slightly oblong ,smooth rocks and hundreds of rocks larger than those so I took about 30 rocks home with me mostly for slinging but 2 of them I plan on using for very primtive axes ( the kind you use to club a tree over) almost a club and was wondering wht the best hafting meathod would be (each one is a little under 1/2in thick.

2. What is the best meathod for using such a tool for "cuting" down small saplings

Thats a very nice hatchet there paleo but I was thinking more between these three choices.

1.Place rock in green Y-shaped stick tie at top.

2. Shave green stick down thin ,bend over rock , tie at bottom.

or 3. Split stick insert rock and tie in at top and bottom.

which is most durable and how does one use such a tool?  Undecided

It isnt going to hole well like that. I have heard of native americans sticking the head in a branch and letting the tree grow around it but this seems highly impractical. You can dish the inside on one end of the wood out into kinda a cone shape to fit the celt in. Hope this helps

Make sure it's sharp Smiley And keep your hands, feet, head etc out of the way of both the tree and the axe Wink

just a tapering hole that holds the head by friction

My favorite method is to hand someone a good shaped rock and bet them they can't do it.

Make sure the celt does not touch the sides of the hole.  If it touches anything other than just the top and bottom of the handle, as you chop, it will wedge it deeper and split the handle.  When you chop with it, hit at almost a 90 degree angle, then hit several inches above.  You need to hit more than the diameter of the tree apart.  When your chips come out, they will be humming and will fly a great distance.  James Parker told me those little tidbits, I wish he had told me before I broke about six handles.  If you can find one, a copper busse bar makes a really great celt.  Bill

Those rocks you got from the lake sound a lot like "petosky stones" My Aunt loved to collect them, because of the pattern on them.

Hallo there Dan!
I'm not very much into handling stone axes, for that I have made just one (but I'm preparing the second, I have crafted the axe and am now preparing the handle.... a set of picture will soon appear here  Cheesy).
But I've seen many of these axes, and I've come to a conclusion: the "conic hole" is the best way to handle it, but I suggest you not to pierce the whole handle.
I mean, "dig" the handle, but leave some wood intact, so that the axe will stay there, when you use it.
I'm sorry for my poor English, I don't know if you have understood, but as I said I'm preparing a handle and I'll post a picture that will explain exactly what I mean!
Greetings,
Mauro.

If the head is touching anything except the top and bottom of the hole, sooner or later, it will split the handle.  Google Larry Kinsalla, How to make a celt.  He works at Cahokia Mounds, his handles are copied from the two or three surviving wooden handles.  These are precontact Mississippian and possibly one late Woodland Phase handles.  The possible late Woodland is at Moundville, Al., the other is at Cahokia.  There are a few others, their provinace is not known, they may be as old.  I don't know about Europe or Africa or Asia, there may be more out there.  Bill
