Slo-mo javelin with amentum
Apr 1st, 2010 at 12:37pm

With fixed amentum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmPSKu6-TMM

With detaching amentum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtCDobXr9Gg

With both of these throws you can see plenty of spin but there is only 1/4 of a rotation in the amentum from finger to attachment point.

You're obviously enjoying your camera and we get to see the benefit.

How much does the amentum increase the range? Also what are the relative pros and cons of the attached or releasing types?

It gives you more power but what it mostly gives is more accuracy, so the effective range is easily doubled. The fixed amentum makes for sense for combat where quick reloads are important, but for hunting the detaching version is probably better, it has a cleaner release and find it more accurate. I am a fan of the hypothesis that the baton de commandement is actually a handle for a spear throwing cord.

Great videos. The slo-mo is so clean and easy to see. The javelin looks cool too. Did you make them yourself.

I am most imprest on your ability to move with that black leather coat. I would be sweating like crazy, but I must say you wear it well. Love the videos.

Thanks for the response. Very interesting, I don't think I'd even heard of throwing with an amentum before. At what range would you feel confident of hitting a man sized target?

I can hit every time with serious force at seven yards, cos thats how much space I have in the garden Smiley

I never really have the chance to let rip at serious distances because if I was seen outside the house with that thing its a prison sentence for sure. I took a risk carrying it on the train to my parents place in a big length of plastic drainpipe but I dont think I'm in a hurry to do it again!

This is the current state of the javelin arts over at PaleoPlanet: http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/33494

i couldn't agree more since i have been using it effectively for quite a while now. not only does it give added torque and power but, as David says, it imparts that critical spin which everyone knows translates to stability in flight and much greater accuracy.

...
...

i have yet to try it without the handle, but i imagine it's much the same, maybe even easier.
