Making a fingerloop more comfortable?
Mar 20th, 2010 at 2:41pm

I recently made a sling that I like, except that the finger loop is pretty skinny. Is there a way to thicken it up or pad it somehow?

Two common ways is to add a whipping to it or sew on some leather like the Balearics often do.
Here is a picture of my sisal sling with jute whipping, work great.

timann's whipping idea is good, but you could also make the loop with two or three warps and weave it with jute, wool, hemp, etc.

He can do that on his next sling, but not on the one he has already made Wink

Shepherds in central Spain used to make slings with three pieces of leather: one in the pouch, to reinforce it; another in the releasing point, to avoid the wear, and the third in the loop, just for what you are looking for. Perhaps you can try this solution.

I might try the leather idea. How exactly would I sew it on? Would I cut out a rectangle then wrap it around and sew?

Funny, I tried something like a mixture of both methods a few months ago: a thin leather strap wrapped around the loop strand. Worked quite well.

Btw, good to see you back on the forum, Pio. How is your conejo style going? Are the rabbits in your area already on the endangered species list?

Ah, so true! So, whipping or leather it must be. Whipping (wrapping) being the easiest if you don't like or know how to sew.

I think it would be possible to add some warps to an existing finger loop and weave over them. It would depend on the original loop, of course, but if the existing loop is too narrow it shouldn't be a problem. The extra warps could be made the same size and with the same techniques as the loop, and could be tied in place along side the loop. Than it would be a simple matter to weave over them as though that were the original plan.
