I made one this weekend and although it works, it is not as loud as I expected. I think I have the shape about right (Elipticalish) so I think it could be the end-on profile whch is wrong. Has anyone ever made one? Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

When I was a kid, I had a book called "Where did you go?...."Out." "What dd you do?" "Nuthin."
It was about all the little self-made toys and games and such that young lads made for themselves back in the 30s and 40s. Things like spool tanks and slingshots and....Bullroarers.
I made one, using (as I recall) a piece of wooden Venetian blind slat. It worked quite well...
That was almost 50 years ago, so I don't remember much of the details!

It worked quite well as I remember (also around 50 years ago). If you're making one out of wood, make sure the cross section is not symmetrical. It has to be induced to spin on its own axis as it is being spun around.

Mine is only half as big as your largest so maybe thats the problem.
Everything else seems about right, so longer and thinner is the way forward.

No, they are meant for communication over long distances. Also, they are used in some religious rituals. The roaring helps you go into a trance.
The only way they could be a weapon is if you hit yourself with it.
