Atlatl + Sling Combo?
Feb 1st, 2010 at 10:23pm

I recently showed a buddy the atlatl, and when in the wood shop today he just started making one. (Art students, hooray)

When we were walking back he asked me what if we attached my sling to the end of the atlatl. I was certain it would work, and I KNEW we weren't the first to think of this. It would work sort of like a treubchet. There's gotta be a name for this, any insight?

Ah, so that's what a staff sling is. I thought it sounded familiar.

I went through this myself and i'm sure there are some slingers that will disagree, but sometimes a cross between two useful items isn't quite as good or useful as the originals. The atlatl is a great dart thrower and the sling was created for throwing rocks. The hybrid you are describing just complicates the sling and turns an atlatl into a mere handle. Just my op. You should try it out for yourself.

I have heard that you can throw an atlatl dart with just a sling. Holding both cords tight in your hand and placing the dart in the pouch then throw like an atlatl. I never tried it, but can see it working. I don't think you would get as good of results as an atlatl.

Hmmm... I don't think that would work very well, you can't push with a rope. I'll have to try it though.

It wouldn't be pushing. When done properly the rope pulls the atlatl. I've had some experience with this as an alternative to trying to figure out how to make a cestrosphendone. It works the same way as a french arrow, but you don't have to bother with making a notch in the dart. I could hit within a foot of my intended target within an hour at any range, so think stationary pig hunting.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.
