primitive sickle

i know, it's not really a weapon, but...
thought to be used to cut grass for shelters or to harvest grains. i've seen several examples over the years, many made from animal jaw bones, and have always wanted to make one. this one is caribou antler and the blades are flint set with hide glue. i'll reinforce them later with PPG but i'm kind of running low at the moment.

That looks great.

I have read that flint liths used as scythe blades for grain take on a distinctive "glaze."   Its permanent and very unique, though none of the books I have show decent pictures of it, so I dont know what it looks like.  A few minuets spent rummaging through the web turned up nothing.

I suppose if you ever start to wonder what that glaze looks like, you now are in a position to find out.

Cheesy thanks, Grayorchid. yeah, i have actually seen that "glaze". under a microscope it shows up as a distinct scoring pattern.

On steel tools it looks kinda like very straight wood grain running parallel from the edge toward the spine of a blade. Also kinda reminds me of modern 'damascene steel' where they acid etch the blade to make the whorls stand out. For some reason cutting grain leaves micro-scratches on anything used to cut it. Looking for those marks on stone fragments is such an integral part of archeology that my Technology in Civilization I course spent a month on 'corn glaze' and 3 months on everything else from prehistory until the Inquisition.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

I know the reason; silicic acid crystals.

It could totally be used for a weapon. Man the stuff you make, makes me speculate that you have some sort of time machine stashed somewhere. Great work Wink

tidy work PA! Very similar things were made here, though typically not used for grains as much as roofing/cordage raw materials long grasses etc and also, much like ancient Europe, for cuttings herbs and medicines.

Great tool.  I like sickles a lot, and, like my mother, I tend to use (steel Cheesy)sickles sometimes as gardening tools.

I think PPG is that gear people make with the pitch, charcoal and fibre, caveman epoxy stuff.

Might be some other PPG though.
