bone tipped throwing spear
Dec 21st, 2009 at 6:54pm

here is a bone bladed throwing spear i made this afternoon. the blade is about 11" long and made from beef bone. i dyed it in a little tea to give it that old look. the shaft is fire straightened cottonwood and the hafting is hide glue and rawhide. the whole thing is about 7' long.

what did you use to shape the bone?...a grinder, or just sand paper?

thanks, Knaight Smiley

Dog, i use a scroll saw to cut out the rough shape then a sander for the reduction and fine shaping. i finish with hand sanding.

It aint finished yet... taper the rear two thirds of the shaft till the end is about half the original diameter, this will push the balance point forward. One third of the way back from the tip is where you want it. Next, get a leather thong and tie it on as an amentum. If you havent thrown a spear with an amentum then you dont know what you are missing.

Grin haha! i knew you'd say that, David, and i'm ready for you! you can't see it in the photos but it is tapered and perfectly balanced to one third. also, i tried the amentum this weekend and it was very cool Wink

i could tell  Wink  i was impressed with the added power it provided, though i still think the baton d' comandment, with the right missle, gives better accuracy and range.

bone is tougher than obsidian, but will break if you hit something hard like a tree or rock. against an animal, it will do just fine!  Wink
