aztec, you might already know this, but if the groove goes all the way around the stone, the axe was made between 7,000 and 10,000 years ago. If it goes 3/4 of the way around (there is no groove on the bottom of mine), it was made somewhere between 1,000 and 7,000 years ago. If there isn't a groove, its just like paleoarts said. Its a celt made within the last 1,000 years.

If its a beatiful piece of work made out of glass, paleoarts done it early this century!

Maybe I might try to chip an edge on the "working" side of the blade but I'm not really sure yet, need to see what kind of stone I can get.

Frank, if you are using rounded (river) rocks, then i suggest pecking and grinding to put an edge on. you can do it with a modern grinding wheel or angle grinder, or the old school way with a harder stone and a slab of sandstone for hand grinding. you'll be surprised at the sharp edge you can get doing it that way. chipping, or knapping, is pretty much reserved for stone like obsidian, chert, and flint. although, i have seen people use the knapping technique to remove initial mass before they begin the grinding process.

We basically live on a large chunk of sandstone, the entire top of the plateau is sandstone and there's a big rock that sticks out of the ground near our burn pile so I may just use it to grind an edge on whatever stone I get that'll fit into the axe I'm making. The hard part is finding something that's NOT sandstone around here,LOL. The local Mini-Mall has areas that have stones in em', maybe if I snoop around there I can find something that'll work. Of course everyone will think I've gone crazy looking for rocks in a Mini-Mall parking lot but hey, who cares. Grin
