I challenge you to make something ugly and porly crafted. I bet you can't do it.

Everything you have made so far is text book perfect or better. Keep up the good work you seem to have found your outlet.

Ahh yes. I have a corner of my work bench full of. . . .not really failures. More like "attempts and ideas that were better in my head than in reality." or as Paleoarts put, "crap."

Most of them still exist because they will probably get turned into something else, or the garbage can was full.

How do you heat treat novaculit and what is the purpose?  What changes before and after the treatment?

Same question. I thought stone didn't need to be heat treated.

certain types of knappable stone benefit from heat treatment and others don't. obsidian, for example, is the closest thing to glass there is and isn't really affected by heat treatment (it doesn't need it, either). novaculite is a chalkier, softer stone that, when treated, becomes more homogeneous and easier to work. it flakes better and doesn't shatter as easily. many modern knappers heat treat stone in small kilns, but the traditional way is to lay down a bed of sand, place your spalls on it and cover with more sand, then slowly build a fire on top distributing the coals evenly. you have to wait until the fire is completely out and the stones are back to air temp before you uncover them or they might crack. many types of stone undergo some wild color changes in this proccess. archeaologist have found heat treated stone going back tens of thousands of years so this isn't anything new.

beautiful Smiley

But what is novaculite ?

Quote:
Novaculite is a form of chert or flint found in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma and in the Marathon Uplift of Texas. Novaculite is considered to be highly siliceous sediments and may be a product of the low-grade metamorphism of chert beds. The strata were deposited in the Devonian Period and subjected to uplift and folding during the Ouachita orogeny of the Pennsylvanian/Permian Periods. Novaculite is very resistant to erosion and the layers of novaculite stand out as ridges in the Ouachita Mountains.

Novaculite is a form of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz. The color varies from white to grey-black and the specific gravity shows an increase from 2.2 to 2.5. The very hard dense rock is used as a whetstone. It has been mined since prehistoric times both as material for use as arrow and spear points and as sharpening stones.

The word novaculite is derived from the Latin word novacula, for razor stone.

Ya see and there's me initially thinking it was some kind of man made flint substitute lol
