What I do mauro, is heat it up to a dull, dark red hot, and let it cool over time. I have never had a blade shatter after doing this. Then agian, I have not forged in a while. While reading a Wikipedia artical on working steel, I got the idea that annealing is heating the steel, and then slowly cooling it.
