PRIMITIVE KNIVES
Aug 27th, 2009 at 1:45am

here are some knives i've made recently. the big obsidian blade was given to me by Jim Winn. Jim's one of the premier knappers around. the blade is nearly a foot long and thin as can be! the handle is elk antler. the second blade was a gift from Tom Mills and is my personal favorite. it's chert i believe, and measures out at around 8". the handle is whitetail deer antler as are the other two. the smaller ones are my own and are dacite and mohagany obsidian respectively. all the blades are set with hide glue and pine pitch glue and wrapped with soaked rawhide.

Shocked Those are some sweet stone knives! Do you use them at all or are they more for display purposes?

i use my stone knife, but not like i would a steel one. they are for skinning and processing animals, cutting hide and cordage.....etc. they are not for cutting or whittling wood, although you can cut small branches and twigs with them. essentially, knapped stone is like glass, extremely sharp but brittle. also, the knapping process produces a scalloped or serrated edge that isn't functional for whittling. a simple freshly struck flake is much more useful when it comes to woodworking. you can scrape, slice, or shave with it and when it goes dull it can either be resharpened or simply tossed.

here's a couple new ones. both are heat treated novaculite. although one is white and the other black, they came from the same chunk of rock! that novaculite is some cool stuff. both handles are whitetail deer antler, one dyed with permanganate and the other left natural. both are hafted with hide glue and wrapped with rawhide.

kid, hide glue is basically colagen. it's the stuff you scrape off the inside of the hide when you skin an animal. it can also be made from horns and hooves. you dry it out, crush it up into powder or granuals, and reconstitute it with water and a little heat whenever you need it. it's been used as a quality glue from prehistoric times all the way up into the 20th century. ever heard the expression "that horse is ready for the glue factory"? that's exactly what they used to do with old horses and other animals, send them to the factory to make glue out of them! for a perfectly good substitute, have your mom pick up some Knox gelatin at the supermarket. it's pretty much the same thing. mix with a little warm water and...glue!
