moccasins
Jul 26th, 2009 at 1:17pm

what do you know about making them?  best leather to use, where to get the leather and the design instructions etc.?

i want to go barefoot but its little rough, so i thought some leather would be good enough padding and keep the barefoot feeling.   your thoughts, experiences?

Elk hide is best for them, as far as I'm concerned. Soft and tough. As far as making them, there are many varieties, from the traditional ones you see in craft stores, to one piece ones you put together in a few minutes. Interesting thing is that the basic designs had their parallels in Europe as well.

Yeah, those are very similar to ones found in Medieval Ireland and Scotland. They go by the name "bog shoes" . They have no top flap, though. The problem with the ones I wear is that the seam tends to "drift" to one side eventually.

I've been wondering about this for a while too, and I will probably try it if I can find some good leather.

Problem with Tandy is that they are expensive. They don't always have the best quality, so look around. If they are all you have though...

here on the trade blanket or over on paleoplanet's. tandy is the biggest rip off there is! there has to be a thousand different sources on the net to get good leather, most directly from the source.
