Also, how do clay glandes stack up against cement ones?  I'm thinking of posting a poll.

Just to bump this good thread.   Iwas about to ask, but thought I'd search first.  Glad I did.

I bought 2 25lbs packages of clay for 13.75 a piece.  My 8 year old daughter made 20 a little smaller than a golf ball.  I made 32 about the size of small hens eggs.  We used not quite half the clay (no funds for a gram scale).  I put them in the oven at 300 F. (I think kilns go over 600F)  I figured this was a good halfway point between sun dry and kiln baked.  Also I want to sling some tomorrow.  I'll report back.

BTW ilovepancakes, any follow up dates? Smiley

RJB,

Clay is almost all I shoot, I don't fire it just let it air dry for a day or so. Sounds like you are getting a better price then I am. I always keep a few football (American) shaped glandes in my car in case I can do a demonstration. I ended up dating the girl from the craft store for a little over a month. It was fun but we didn't have any real connection. I still see her when I go to buy clay.

I was "borrowing" landscape rocks from a business nearby.  They were beautiful white egg shape and size.    I didn't make any dent in their rocks but still, I needed to get my ammo  honestly for my own conscience.  Besides, the rocks may have been shaped nice, but they were in all different sizes.

I just checked my clay.  I had it set at 250F (not 300F)  They look done.  Can't wait 'til tomorrow Smiley

AAAAHHHH!!!!  They shrunk to the size of a golf ball or smaller.  I usually like stones as big or bigger than an egg.

Oh well.  I still can't wait to chuck 'em.

Fire them higher. It reduces shrinkage. 450 maybe?

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

And I must add the picture of them. They are all 50grams (1,76 oz) +/- 2g.
There are 47 of them and it took just 20 minutes Smiley
The biggest benefit for me is the weight and shape uniformity.

If you fire them by letting dry(or heating them in oven for a few hours at 200-220) for a week and then heat them red hot in a campfire, it works much better.

Where does a person acquire a spoon knife?
Could I just sharpen the squirrel droppings out of a stainless steel spoon?
and temper it?

Zamorskym ,did you oil or grease the wooden mold,so the clay doesn't stick to it?

They are used for making spoons and bowls out of wood. Bushcraft stores sell them.

Thanks David. I had been planning the moulds for a half a year but it took only 1,5 hours to carve both halves - the human lazyness is a real monster   Roll Eyes (I was palliating it with my three daughters Smiley to myself)

I haven´t slung for almost 3 months and now I got a strained shoulder because of it. But I am really impatient to check this series in flight.

Jlasud - I had thought I would have to oil the mould too but in the end it was not necessary. I just needed to clean the flat parts sometimes.

Jlasud - point to the greasing. In the next row it looked i would need to grease. But finally i didn´t have to as the solution was tha right moisture. The clay must be partly wet but must not stick to the fingers ! It is the right while to start making glandes without greasing the mould.

yes,i guess if it's dry enough to not stick and wet enough tobe moldable/deformable, then it's good.
I might add mine, spme  big levers attached, so it would be like a big nut cracker. That way pressing would be easier and faster.
