hey, slinger. it's novaculite. a type of volcanic stone kind of like obsidian only not as brittle. it comes mainly from the ohio valley region.

It's a great spear by the way. Really impressive, which is to be expected.

looks great, and douglas fir is a good choice for a shaft.
one of those odd woods. technically it's softwood but it has hardwood properties Smiley

Nice! It looks impressive!
One question, what do you call the types of roping/knoting (whatever you call it) technique that you attached the stone to? Id like to learn how to do that.

nice!

Im not sure I want to pick a fight with you!

Is a spear an easy weapon to master? You have convinced me to think about making one!  Grin

Im currently practicing staff in martial arts, fairly easy and looks good, so im guessing the spear maybe a lot like it, only with one pointy end and extra weight!

I put this together recently, the head is wrought iron that I bought from a blacksmith in Germany. The shaft is a broom handle. I tapered the tail end of the shaft to move the balance point to the forward one-third point. This balances it correctly for throwing.

Morningstar and Paleoarts, both of those are nice spears. As to the staff question, I've practiced martial arts off and on for several years, and I think learning the staff would be a good start to learning the spear. Incidentally, Morningstar, I'm looking for a spearhead similar to what you have to put on a lance. Where did you find yours?

My spears come in two types:
1) A hewing spear (used more like a staff than a throwing weapon). 6-foot hemlock shaft with a 2-foot head from museum-replicas.com. I'd still like to get a butt cap for it, but haven't saved up the money yet.
2)Some light-weight throwing spears made from cheapo trowels from a dollar store and some old broom handles I had lying around. I wrapped below the spearheads with cotton string, then smeared it with Liquid Nails glue to hold/waterproof it

The throwing spears (mine and my son's). They are about 5 feet long.

This was in Leipzig during Wave Gotik Treffen at the medieval village. There were several travelling blacksmiths with portable forges who set up stalls there. I got the spearhead for 20 €. Its a basic bit of metal bashing but probably very representative of standard battlefield equipment.

it's just a simple wrap. the sinew is made up of several peices that bind to each other and shrink when dry. same goes for the gut on the shaft.

david, you're right of course about the pitch. normally i would cover it, but it was so pretty i just couldn't! besides, not a lot of rain here in southern california.
