I respect the Captain Paul design, but I have stayed away from it nonetheless.  In order for a design to be a "favorite" of mine, it has to be made of relatively simple, easy-to-obtain materials, and has to be durable and tough.

I know that a lot of folks regard leather to fit this description, but I don't care for using leather because of the fact that exposure can cause all sorts of problems for leather: deterioration, stretching, fading, cracking, stiffening...

That's why I favor paracord.

My favorite sling design is probably a tie between my 5-strand-solid-pouch design and the "woven paracord (split pouch) sling" design posted by Cliff in the "advice and how-to" section.

PJ, not to be the naysayer. I'm sure you've had a lot of experience with mold and such in humid Florida. I live in AR where its also pretty humid. I used to use all buckskin slings. I've definitely seen the nasty side of animal hides being a tanner, but never had any trouble with the finished product as far as deterioration is concerned. I still have the leather pouches from my original slings. They were used till the buckskin strings stretched so thin they were close to breaking and the skin on my index finger cracked open, but the pouches are still solid, even having slung muddy and wet stones regularly. I could probably sling with them for the rest of my life.

My favorite right now though is a braided hemp sling with a fully woven pouch. I don't know why. Just like the look and feel and sound of them. I've been watching Hondero's videos on Youtube and really like his sling. Anyone know what type he uses? Also, sorry to keep asking for links but I've searched for Captain Paul's tutorial with the search engine here and can't find it. Anyone mind helping me out?

My workhorse sling is a leather pouch using Chris harrisons instruction on his tutorial and 6 strand braided jutte R&R cords. Next one is a Balearic "Egyptian" pouch made with 9 strands of Sisal. Next one after that is my Randers Replica Sling

Hello all!

Let me briefly introduce myself: I am Peter, 43 years old. I live in Duisburg, Germany, near the river Rhine (Rhein to us Germans, with an abundance of pebbles, lucky me... Cheesy ) and have been lurking this great site (forum, how-tos and the rest) for about two months, inbetween braiding hemp slings with cupped leather pouches. (I have combined several designs; pictures may also follow later, if anyone is interested. Smiley )

My favorite sling design is the rockman sling (besides what I mentioned above, of course). I am going to try it out as soon as possible - braided with 3/6 strands and also with 4/8, round braided.

I have two questions concerning this thread:
- Could anyone point me to the tutorial for the Captain Paul design sling mentioned above? I wasn't able to find it via search function.
- @ slinger87: Ain't the rockman sling exactly that: a braided split pouch sling? Or do I miss something?

Bye,
Peter

Willkommen, Kachelator (falls ich das noch nicht gesagt haben sollte)! Gut, noch jemanden vom alten Vater Rhein dabei zu haben.

My favourites at the moment are PJ's 5-string and, for the fast production, Aussie-styles (with leather pouches and whatever cords). I would probably have more fun with the traditional (braided, netted) models if I had better material (jute, hemp, flax) as I have become a bit bored with sisal.

I like woven split pouch, made with paracord because it is fast and easy to make, tough, and can shoot rocks and tennis balls (I usually make a seperate one for tennis balls)

Also, can someone give me a link to a captain paul sling?  I think that I missed something...

I don't like woven split pouch slings. I love'em! Most braiders are doubling the cords and braiding them all the way from one end to the other. I start the finger loop 12 inches from the end; either braid or weave it; start the 4 strand round; drop 2 strands and then add one at the pouch so that there are 3 warps on each pouch. On the release cord, I drop two. Here is an example. Sorry about the color combinations!
