The Ashley Book of Knots is indeed "the knot-tyer's bible," but it is far from being the most user-friendly of the knot books out there.
It's a great encyclopedia of knots, but it's considered to be somewhat lacking on the instructional end of things.

Pawson's "Handbook of Knots" excels in that area.

PeacefulJeffery. Good point. Ashley's is a great book and I don't find it that hard to figure out what is meant most of the time, but admittedly a large proportion of the knots and decorative work is inapplicable to Slinging. Indeed I doubt one would need more than a 4 strand round plait and the 3 strand plait. Other plaits are possible and have a place once one is proficient in plaitting however I doubt that they add anything to the efficiency of a sling however much they may beautify it. Typhon

Never point a loaded sling at something you don't intend to shoot.
