Do you have favorite finger loop, release knots?

I am relatively new to slinging, although I have made a few successful slings with paracord recently.  (Pictures posted in the picture thread.)

I am a knot-tying aficionado, and so I do have "favorites."
I don't suppose that there are any "best" knots for use in slings.  For loops you could use Bowlines and a host of others.  For release knots you could use Multiple Overhand Knots, heck even a small Monkey's Fist.

For my slings, I use my two favorites for this purpose: the loop is a Longbow Knot, and the release is an Ashley's Stopper Knot.

Do you have favorites?  What are they?  Do you believe them to be particularly well-suited to or necessary to your slings, or are they really just personal preference?

I have had a good furtle around on the interwebs and I cant find a 'longbow knot'. There are plenty of references to a 'bowyers knot' which is a timber hitch used to secure a bowstring but I'm pretty sure this isnt the one you show in your pictures.

I mostly use perfection loops and double overhand stoppers on single cords. I recently learned the Matthew Walker to make the release knot for a braided sling.

[EDIT]

I think I have found it here: http://www.marinews.com/Honda-Knot-760.php

And, since Honda is the Balearic word for sling, I reckon its perfect for the job Smiley

[EDIT AGAIN]

Okay, the Honda isnt what you are using. Fess up, how is it done?

I believe the Castilian (common Spanish) word for sling is honda and the Balearic (Catalan) word is fona.

Fona, honda and bassetja are all used on the islands to say sling. Honda is the general Spanish word. I only specified Balearic to increase the slinginess of the reference  Tongue

And if slinginess isnt a word, it should be  Angry

I'll post a photo that I have on my computer at home, later on tonight.  It's the only source I ever found for this knot, actually.  And I thought I had lost the picture I had of it and then found it again (I was very relieved!).

I am indeed familiar with the knot you supplied the link to (animated knot).   I know that one as the Archery Loop.  It's a good knot.  It's not, however, the "Longbow Knot" that I will show you later on.

Here are the two photos from which I learned this most EXCELLENT LOOP KNOT.

I don't know the origin of the photos.  I think I found them on a knot-tying Yahoo group some years ago.

Hello, peacefulljeffrey, thanx for the knot.  It seems wery nice.  So, today I have learned something new Wink.
My non-braided slings have a double bowline for the loop, and a double overhand stopper knot.
My braded slings these days end in something called a wall knot, it holds surpricingly enough even on synthetics.

I will keep your longbow knot on the end of my pocket-piece of paracord and see how it behaves.

Timann, I predict that it will do well.

As the text says, it is easy to undo if necessary.  Easy to adjust the length of the loop for different fingers, too.  Just leave about 3/4" of free end after the loop and you can make it larger in a matter of seconds.

I will see about posting pictures of the Ashley Stopper Knot with instructions, because it too is a good not for use in slings.
A main reason I favor using it is that my using it pays reverence to Clifford W. Ashley, who gave us The Ashley Book of Knots (or "ABOK").

If you don't want to wait for me to get around to posting pictures of the Ashley Stopper Knot (it will take me a few days because I am getting ready to go on a vacation trip), you can probably find it online.

It certainly is.  I am very glad you guys like the knot.  It's excellent.
I tend to really like knots that are based on the Overhand Knot, like this one.

It's amazing that such a knot seems so little known. So simple once you see it! It will certainly go on to my list of essentials.

Given the name, is it supposed to date back to use on the English Longbow?

looks like an ABOK #1029 I'll have to get some line and tie it to be sure though

Definitly not an ABOK #1029 ... infact I can't find this knot in the abok .... a keeper
for those of us who are Knot-Heads....

I use the ABOK 1047 tied with the bight (Flemish Knot AKA Figure-8 Knot)

ABOK = Ashley Book of Knots 3800 + line drawings of various knots, etc. in a very large coffee table book

I use http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1146162295/0#0 a sheet bend to attach the pocket material
sometimes a double with two turns of the line around the leather

and a button knot  ABOK 787 Bosun's Whistle Knot  as the release cord terminator most of the time

I would nominate ABOK as the greatest coffee table book of all time.
Second would be "Houses of the Founding Fathers."
And then any of the many books that features city skylines, (especially of decades past, like NYC in the early 20th century), lighthouses  bridges or castles.

By the way, that Australian fishing website is GREAT!  Instant favorite.  The animated knot section is excellent!  Smiley
