Posts: 74	Re: reintro Reply #16 - Jul 1^st, 2008 at 8:57pm heh, the contrasting tape color is just to mark the striking 'edge'. if you hit with the 'flat' it doesn't count. online retailers for rattan: HHPerkins Caningshop to fight w/ rattan in the SCA you have to be 18. any younger and you're limited to PVC covered in foam (called 'boffers').

i've done both boffer and rattan.

we go all out with rattan. the chance of injury is minimal with the medieval armor. mostly heavy bruising.

i prefer the rattan because you get to wear period armor and if feels more like a real weapon. that, and i have a huge stockpile of rattan as i do filipino martial arts on the side as well as no-holds-barred stickfighting with the Dogbrothers group.

We have numerous members of our Chiv that work with polearms with devistating results.For one I know of it's even his preferred weapon.

Glad to have another member aboard.

Count Sir Maynard. that guy rocks. he fought sword an shield for years and sucked. then he picks up a 5' polearm (generic SCA term) and kicks ass. one of the few that can make it work. deadliest accountant i know.

i don't think i've ever had that many double-kills in a fight.

of course it doesn't hurt that he's played hockey since he was 2.

Sweet Hat.

Just recieved my new one. It's an Gothic Sallet. Hopefully if I get off the road for a bit i can actually pad it and start swinging stick again.

that's from last Spring. i'm also working on a 1st c. gladiator rig built up around a replica of the Hawkedon helmet i had made:

yeah, the sword is standard rattan wrapped in fiberglass packing tape, then duct tape. for thrusting tips i use the foam sold for cartop kayak carriers. that one looks a little like a Q-tip, due to numerous quick repair jobs.

oh, and for any fellow SCAdians, i'm "Robin Wallace; Count and Master of Arms. Kingdom of AEthelmearc" [cue theme music...].
