Steel bullets
Feb 26th, 2007 at 4:50pm

I wonder whether I should purchase some steel bullets (10 mm diameter) for slingshots and try to sling them
...
The shop where I found them asks for 1,90 EUR/30 bullets. (6,3 cent per bullet). I guess I would loose quite a lot of them.

Has anyone made experiences with this kind of projectile yet? Is it worth its price?

I would pay the price. Especially if I had a good target to sling them at - would loose much less and they surely should leave nice marks on almost any material target
I say BUY! Wink

10mm is small.
Wouldn't you be able to get the same size marbles for much less?
Or a bigger size marbles for the same price?

If you go for ammo this small, think about what kind of sling it would fit in.
It sould have a very small split or better, non, and not being too big in itself.

(But I think that less than 2 euro is always worth a try.)

I think 10mm is OK for steel as its a bit heavier than rock, you just have to get proper sling (softer and maybe with heavier pouch).
Don't know how about euros, but I find 1 litas coin (which I think is the same size as euro, just 3.45 times smaller in value) to be very comfortable weight and size for my short sling. Though I have slung these only couple times - these are a bit too expensive to loose Roll Eyes

I my self prefer 35mm ballbearings http://www.spheretecinc.com/products/stainless-steel/
...
but with the 10mm maybe try several at once that worked for me with .50 cal lead balls

Ten millimeter steel ball bearings are going to weigh, let's see ...

4/3
π
r3, radius is 0.5cm, that works out to 0.523 cm3, at 8 grams per c.c. is about 4 grams or 0.15 ounces.  That's rather light.

35 millimeter ball bearings have a volume of 22.45 cm3, which gives them a mass of about 179 grams or 6 ounces.

Hey, Lobo, how much do those cost?  I've been looking around the scrap yards, but nobody has any, in any size.

10mm steel? That's too light even for powerful slingshots!

hey! how bout a rock? from a river (nice and smooth)?  Cheesy I myself prefer rocks because when you buy something you become emotionally attached to it and don't like the prospect of slinging it to where it will inevitably get lost.

I wonder that, too. That is why I asked. I have read somewhere that the cheapest rifle bullet has a price of 2 cent/bullet and I guess that is still more complex than a simple steel ball.

Yes, I have already given some thought to it. Unfortunatly I do not have leather at hand currently else I could try it now. I have a ball from a broken computer mouse that has a size of 20 mm.

Well, in Germany wrist-supported slingshots are illegal. But too light for a powerful weapon? For crossbows they sell 8 mm and 6 mm steel balls.

I didn't yet meet a river that had those. Currently my bag is full of rough edged stones. I already considered buying some stones, they can't be too expensive when people put them in their front gardens in mass. But the point for buying steel balls is to experiment with different types of projectiles.

Try going to a bearing specialist, here we have 'Bearing Man'. There you would be able to get any size bearing that your hart desires.

I want to order from this shop (www.bogensportwelt.de) anyway as I need an arrowrest to repair a bow. The arrowrest costs 0.90 EUR, the price for shipping is 3.90 EUR. A package of 60 bullets costs 3.80 EUR. That would make 4.70 EUR + 3.90 shipping. Not a nice ratio. So now I try to buy some other stuff there.

How about this darts? They are 6.5 inches (157 mm) long, 18 gramms, are made for pistol crossbows and cost 6.90 EUR/12 darts. I don't have a crossbow and would try to sling them like a cestro. Any experiences here? Would that work or would I just waste money?
...

Until now I have only slung some twigs with my braided sling. They rotated badly in air.

I already slung twigs. I think the main problem with them was not that they were so light, but that they were not balanced, not straight and had no fletches.

Throwing a lead dart with fletches on it sounds like the balance would again be in the middle rather than at the point. And my thought was to do some quick experiments with cheap stuff. Making a lead dart on my own sounds neither quick nor cheap. Wink I might just as well try to make a dart myself.

No, I'd love to be able to make darts myself, but I have neither the tools nor the wood for it.
