Beautiful slings, Rockman

I like the bright colors.

I came across a braid pattern in Sling Braiding of the Andes that might be of interest.

It's a 4-strand round braid made with 8 pieces of yarn, 4 of one color and 4 of a contrasting color.

Each strand on the 4-strand braid has one piece of each color of yarn.

One of the colors in a pair (it doesn't matter which) is always kept above the other while braiding.

It produces a sort of feather pattern.

I hope I remember that TimotyPotter-way of making a pattern when I finally get enough colored yarn Smiley

Today I finally decided to make my first  5-strand woven peacefuljeffrey-sling.  I made the simpler 3-strand type some time ago, but...
The paracord I still got I will propably rot in storage, I stupidly cannot afford to use it becasuse the shops apearently keep paracord on the shelf next to the plutonium, wich makes replenishing my stock a bit difficult.  So I used 4 mm poly... for the sling, and 2,8 mm poly... for the weaving of the pouch.
This uses a lot of the thin stuff,  the little piece laying around is what was left of 6 meters used for the weaving of the 5-strand.

The 3-strand pouch sling seems to be best used with small and not to smooth stones.

I know I can get more paracord by ordering it over internet from the US(, but I suffer from being an ancient fossil, and hate to buy a thing I have not held in my hand Cheesy).

you can tell the weave is tight by how stiff it gets
oh if your wondering, the color is from dying in beet juice but then i left it out in the rain overnight by mistake.  heres how it was before

works great for being new, its still so stiff that when i put a rock in the pouch it stays almost flat.
takes quite awhile to break in but when it does soften up its such a pleasure to use worn in coton, very unlike all other slings ive used.

visually its also pretty cool to see how it wears.
im thinking itd be neat to make more cotton slings and natural dye/stain them with stuff like tomoatoes, onions etc.
then theyd show every nick and fade spot from the rock hitting the release cord, etc., kind of how clothes fade and wear reflecting how theyre used from person to person.

The beat sling is really beautiful! How many strands in what kind of braid? Also, how did you taper the release cord so evenly?

If you'd like deep brown to black try gathering the green walnut husks and boiling them in water. It makes a very nice dye. Add some alcohol if you store it to prevent mold, and make sure and store it in a plastic container sitting on a towel because it will expand and you'll have a mighty mess!

my new elk hide sling, traded for it from paleoarts

i'm having a little trouble with it though, when i release my release cord's tab raps my knuckles, and then it starts opening, but only to a 45 degree angle, or something (i could only guess for the blurs) it then makes an 'S' shape by slacking, before snapping out and releasing the rock. the problem is that even in the split second it does this, my release then gets the timing wrong, with the rock now launched to the side. normally i don't care about accuracy, but it kept on going to much over. when i tryed to reajust i did it too early Embarrassed it is a great sling though, but i'm going to need to try again

sadly, this sling trued to kill me 4 times. twice the release cord swung around my neck, but i fought it off and emerged victorious. the rest of the time it just smacked me. as punishment i over worked it yesterday to teach it proper manners

the braid that paleoarts uses is really cool, he makes it so that it is just tight enough to make it gap less, and just loose enough to make it look cool there is no stretch though

the picture is the braid being squeezed, showing how it's loose, but the parts that aren't squeezed look normal, cool eh?

let me see the grip you are using, kid. also, your style. i might be able to solve some of your problems. normally, with this sling, i use a wider loop that goes over my bottom three fingers, with the retension cord on the outside of my index finger. the tab is held by the index finger and thumb. this gives me a fairly wide area between release and retension cords and allows the pouch to remain more open. as a result, i can sling larger rocks. it's also designed for my side arm throw, but i do use it for underhand as well. it is not designed for helicopter, unfortunately.

Timann, your Peacefuljeffrey Sling came out beautiful!
So neat and orderly!  Very nice work!

I haven't tried to make one with a thinner diameter cord for the weaving, yet.  I'll have to try it.  I like the result you got very much.

From the scale that the tennis and golf balls provide in your photo, it looks as though the weaving with thinner cord enabled the pouch to be wider than it typically comes out when I use paracord.  That's a benefit, in my view.  My Peacefuljeffrey Slings are suited for golf balls, but probably couldn't do tennis balls very well because the pouches are not as wide as yours seems to be.

Has anyone else used thin cord like Timann did and achieved a similar result?

i see now, one big problem is that you need the finger loop pointing up towards you thumb. that way you have a hold like your multi-finger loop. this helps. I'll get a picture when i find my dad's camera...

Thanks, peacefuljeffrey, I think the pouch came out rather nice myself, too  Wink
And yes, it works nice for tennis-and golf balls.
During the weaving of the pouch, I did not tighten the cord too much from side to side, but tightened it hard lenghtwise.  That should explain the wideness of the pouch, with a little try and fail I think it should be possible with just paracord

I`ll try for a close-up of the pouch.
