Handmade sling I bought from a local Balearic slinger during my visit.
It resembles the slings Menorcan slingers in Carthagian service used.

I haven’t used it much yet.

Well I guess I can’t hide the details of my travels even a bit.
Yeah, it was Luis from which I bought it. Great guy. He gave me a ride to the training field. We had a slinging session and he gave me some tips and a ride back to my hostel.

Definitely a great time. His slinging club had a shed for storing piles of ammunition, targets and even spare slings if you would believe it.

If you ever have the time for a visit, CA posted contact info to local Balearic slinging hosts in my Spain thread. And remember to bring sunglasses or a cap cause I ended up spending my entire session slinging into the sun  Embarrassed

That will be for another thread though. I never did snap any images at the field (was only there for half a hour) but I did at some other (non-slinging) places.

I have managed to catch some pictures of slinging figures at a local museum though.

Here are two loose natural fiber slings. Just showing one of mine for comparison. The one on the left is a sling I made from New Zealand flax. I wanted to try a new (new to me) pouch style.  This sling works surprisingly well. Despite being longer than my usual and very lightweight, I was pretty accurate with it.

The other sling is my sling trade with AlbionSlinger. It's a beaut.  Notice how much more even the braid is than with my sling. I tried too, when I made mine. Still can't come close.

I really like the pouch design. I haven't tried it with stones, but it works well with rustyballs.  The release cord has HDPE fibers in the end so it's held up well, and it makes a very nice crack when I sling (unlike my other slings, because I usually use a tab)

Looks like that will last a long time!
8 strand? did you do it free-hand or with a braiding disk?

...nope. It broke at the finger loop after less than a month. It was only 4-strands of jute where it broke. Sad

Aw. That sucks.

I really like jute for its feel, but this here is precisely why I also dislike it. It is also very susceptible to wear, as I'm sure anyone who has used it is aware. I've had so many release cords snap because of a tangled stone. I had one sling that I had just finished, and I was throwing a pretty jagged stone, it was probably the 30th stone that I'd thrown. It got caught in the cord, ripped through all 4 brand new strands in that 1 throw.   This doesn't happen with sisal, but it feels bad on my delicate skin Smiley

Fixed. Here’s a before and after. Instead of the finger loop bending the jute, it is now in line.

Ya I find for the amount of work involved, some of the natural fibers aren't worth the effort.
Hemp seems to do well for me as well as cotton. Wool, I don't really like.
Any reviews on linen?

I like linen. I haven't made any cordage myself, but I have a big spool of it I got somewhere a while back.  I've done several linen slings, and also combined it with hemp to do a half and half braid.  From my own experience, it's not quite as strong as hemp, but still holds up well.  It's pretty low stretch and also has a softer feel than hemp.
