That looks cool. I thought raffia was more of a golden color?

Very nice Teg. The braiding looks really well, especially for such rough material.

Thanks for the nice replies! It's always good to hear that others like your works.

Yes, that's true. The colour on this photo is due to bad lighting while taking the picture and the treatment with wax, which altered the colour a bit.

The trick is in the preparation of the material. I split up the thicker fibers I buy into thin ones. You can do this really fast by running it several times through your fingers. This way you will also get rid of irregularities.

Teg,  nice replacement

Its precursor (a similar one also out of raffia) broke on Thursday and awaits its reparation (new tail, new wrappings). So the new one is already in use.  Wink

Yea, soaking the fibers helps a lot too if you want a nice sling.
Waxed after you made the thing or did you wax each fiber?

Couple of pouches using a new technique called (I think) "warp interlock" to change colors in interesting patterns. Sorry about the foggy picture, I had something on my phone's case.

Cook Island Sling:

I've been holding on to an illustration of a sling from the Cook Islands. The weave looked simple enough but it took the better part of the morning to figure it out. I used eleven cords for the pouch then down to five for the cords, no whipping. The material is garden variety jute but I had to get the weave down first before attempting with palm.

@ Squirrelslinger (Reply #3769)

Soaking the fibers while working is better if you make wrappings and like things with single fibers as they will have less tendency to rip. However when the fibers dry they will shrink a bit...
This sling is worked dry, except the wrapping around the finger loop.
This sling was waxed after finishing it.

@ Pikaru (Reply #3775)
I've been playing around with this drawings in my head some months ago and run into a problem: Won't the width of the pouch shrink when the sling is stretched/whirled? Is it a problem? What do you observe?

A replacement sling for everyday use.

Braided bast (raffia) treated with beeswax to increase the lifetime.

The pouch has some protective wrappings with twisted fibers against abrasion.

Where are all the photos? I'm assuming this thread has a photo, but there is no picture or link.

Very nice Teg. Definately top shelf.

Rafia is another fiber that is not hard to work with and makes a great finished product.
