This one I finished and tried yesterday after experimenting with a new idea for a cupped leather pouch, that should be made of one piece and allow a simple assembly.

It slings nearly everything from small rocks up to tennis balls. You can also load it with a lot of small stones and throw them.

Details and pouch template will be posted in the PDF leather pouch templates thread.

Three slings finished last summer :
(click the pictures to see them in huge ^^ )

Tablet woven one, 26 cards*4 threads, 104 strings of weaving mayem :
...
Way too short to be useful, release knot as hard as LukeWebb's clubs and as supple as your broom handle... but I did it for the sake of working on my weaving skills, so it's ok.
Yet it's my best split pouch til now, even if the cords are crappy ^^

Paracord tematlatl one :
...
Trying to follow David Mornigstar's tutorial, not so easy when you're still trying to figure how to use opposable thumbs...
But it's still a pretty one for me :p

Braided flax one :
...
and
...
Not as pretty as Jaegoor's, but made from plumbing flax fibers.
3 braids pouch, doesn't work very well with tennis ball but do wonders with ovoid clay shots
I still have to try slinging the fishing weight

Nice work, Caldou! I like the look of the tematlatl sling. Isn't the release knot a little bit heavy? And what kind of knot is it? Looks like some sort of mutliple turks head... If you want to make it even prettier in my eyes, try to hide the ends inside the release knot  Wink.

The card woven one looks interesting. Another point on my to do list beside learning peruvian braids: tablet weaving. How did you manage to switch from "round" (or is it curled up?) to flat and back again? If you wouldn't have mentioned tablet weaving I would have thought it is knitted... The pattern seems quite similar to my eyes.

Your flax ones remind me, that some plumbing flax is also waiting for me Wink. But first I have to finish the current one out of bast fibres.
You may try to work with more strands (5,7,9,...) so that the braid gets a bit denser... I bet Jaegoor could give you better hints than I Wink.

It's definetly not a light one Cheesy
I don't know the name of this "long turk's head", but it's the one used on sticks and knife handle ^^ Like this one.
I never really know how to end braids, so i usually end up with something big ugly and already fraying Cheesy

From closer, it's more difficult to mistake it for knit Smiley
At first, I tried to weave my band in round... but I couldn't keep the tensionning equal, so I stopped after 3 pass and I cheated : the round is sewn side to side ^^

The good point of using fibers is you don't need to add strands. Just use more fibers for each strand to make it beefier ^^
It's main problem is the messy look, since I did it in the reconstruction of some neolithic house while talking about the sling during the Celtic Ages, so I didn't take a special care to make it nicer.

Actually, should I live out my sling skills, I believe I would train a lot more with this one and ovoid ammo, she is light, long enough and quite strong ^^ plus she works well with egg shapes Smiley

You may try whipping over single or multiple strings or sew them together. If you are into artificial materials heat shrink tube is also a nice and clean solution. Otherwise you can pull the ends into the knot like you pull the end of a whipping under itself. At least that is what I sometimes do Wink

Thank you for the video! I used to make one cord bracelets in a similar manner. The 3 strand ones I did freehanded but for the more complex ones I always drew a scheme, nailed it to a carton tube and traced the pattern. Maybe I can manage it with this video without drawing a plan Wink.

Mhh... With dense I did not mean the amount of material you work with but how much space is between the individual strings. See the attached photo: The first and the last section are 3 strand braid with 4 strings in each strand. The middle section is a 12 strand braid with one string per strand. The pattern of the braid changes quite a lot. It gets "denser". Also the properties of the braid are different (try bending it laterally).

Yeah, when working with more individual fibers you can usally get a cleaner braid with higher starnd count. This gives you more braids per inch or as Teg said a higher braid density.

Running a lighter over those fiberous slings will really clean them up and get rid of the fuzzys.

Good work Caldou.

It was a beautiful weekend in Monterey California. I found a couple of great spots to cast. My buddy took a bunch of pictures. Here's a good one of me releasing one to the ocean. Ideal stones were plentiful on the upper beach area at this location.

I don't know, i bought 40m for 3€ in a bazaar (typical chinese, in Spain have one for every street) the chinese never know what sells but he have all items of the world of bad quality and cheap.

I think that is hemp or cotton with some wax, fairly plastic at the movement, once braided loses plasticity, is fairly rigid and i like it, the thread have soul and cover, not are twisted fibers, is very resistant to tension and harsh rugged to make good knots... however not is good with the friction.

The sling are one braid of 7 strands in spike, in the pouch, two braids of three threads, the surplus are knoted at the sling and reinforces the braid in the wear zones (i would been can use the surplus cord to make zigzag and create one woven pouch), the pouch have two braids of three thread and each braid have one cord added in the side, another thread, wrap the two with "8's" on each side of the bag, the extrems of the pouch are covered with tape because the wear can cut fibers.

It is normally cold this time of year in Monterey. I could have worn shorts rather then pants and I would have been comfortable.
