Fantastic!

It looks amazing for a sling you made from ready to hand materials in a forest.

How does it throw?

Well, today I'm going to try it, bark is dry now, everything is stronger now Wink

Looking forward to the results! I had this in mind as well when doing the cordage course a few weekends ago but have not gotten the coradage part down yet.

Here is a twisted jute (braid) and leather pouch sling I made for my son. The cord is made from gutted 5mm braided jute sash cord, which I have twisted to make cordage. I copied some of the designs I saw on here and made holes in the leather for the cord. This was my first go at making cordage and it works fine. Where I went wrong was not counting the holes and working out beforehand where the cords would exit the leather, and ended up with them coming out of different sides. Grin I singed off the fuzz.

This is a leather cupped pouch with sisal cord, made of 2 strands of 3 twisted together. This made a smaller diameter cord than the one above, around 3.5-4mm diameter. The pouch has been sewn with a triangular shape at the ears, with a hole punched in the centre. The finger loop was originally 6 pieces of string folded over, then I decided to try weaving for the first time, and made a crudely woven loop. As this wasn't in the original plan, some of the strings crossed over each other and were difficult to weave. This one holds a tennis ball perfectly.

Where did you aquire this sisal? It's much darker sisal than I've ever seen. I like it.

Hi Dan,

I got this in the UK in a hardware shop, in 50m rolls marked 'Sisal Cord', but I have been wondering if it really is sisal, or just mislabelled jute cord. It has that earthy smell that burlap sacks get, so it may well be jute, although it is slightly darker than the other jute cord I have. I picked it up because I hadn't realised sisal was made into thin cord.

Braided sling with stitched leather pouch

This sling is my first attempt at 4 strand braiding, which mostly went OK apart from two areas where I got confused. I thought about running the pouch strands through a leather sleeve sewn to the outside of the pouch, then after I had made it realised I needed to put a couple of stitches in to hold the pouch in place. This one fits a tennis ball. If I use it with stones a lot I will reinforce the release cord where it joins the pouch.
