First of all, Maudie, Welcome!
Did you just find this place? Slings are fascinating for some of us; a very simple device, and it takes years to learn to use it well. But the learning process is a lot of fun!
I suggest you go over to the Guides and Articles section, and read a couple of articles under "Advice and How-To's". If you completely new to the sling, start with
David Taylor's article
which has several videos showing him using a sling in various ways. Taylor provided his videos in several formats, for convenience.
Other good articles to read are Lynn Ballard's
Making and Using the Venerable Hand Sling
(which has some pictures, but no videos), Larry Forsyth's
How to Build and Use a Traditional Apache Sling
which describes a technique for hunting with a sling, and Mark Weaver's
Tennis-overhand (Weaver) Style Overhand Release
, which has a description and videos of yet another slinging technique.
Please do not be intimidated by the large number of styles. Everybody I know (including myself) just use a couple of techniques most of the time, and we each develop a style that suits how our bodies work. One of the simplest techniques for you to learn may be an underhand throw, which you can see demonstrated by Mike Greenfield (
AVI format
or
QuickTime format
).
