Shepherd's Bag
Feb 14th, 2007 at 12:12am

I am wanting to make a shepherd's bag in order to keep my stones in. I want to make it out of leather so that it hangs by my side (at the waist) I couldn't find any other posts on this subject with the search feature.
Does anyone have any ideas of how I should go about making this?
Thx Cool

Here are two pages about making medieval bags. Unforunatly they are in German only but I guess the pictures will help.

A shepherd's bag is on my to-do list, too. I just need to find the time for it...

Well, I'm assuming you just need a satchel type... Patterns and measurements are lovely and all, but the best advice I can give you is to sew the material inside out, so the seams get left on the inside.

The flat type (heaps simpler) simply needs you to lay two pieces of material together and sew up the sides of it, attach a shoulder strap and to just invert the whole thing.

The type with a flat bottom, sort of like a box, is a little bit trickier. In essence, cut out your base with the right size first, and measure the perimeter of this piece.
And when you cut the fabric to size, ALWAYS leave a centimeter spare fabric  on each side for seam allowance!
If you want the sides of the bag from one piece, simply make the side panel this long. If you want it from two (or more), divide the measurement by the number of panels you want. Pin the sides flat around the outside of your base, and sew.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted! Too many people I know flee in terror at the word 'sewing', so I thought a basic lesson might be in order. Let me know if I was too generic about anything! aND BEST OF LUCK.  Grin

I really liked the patterns for the shepherds bags, but I think it would be simpler and stronger to make the bag out of one piece of material and just sew up the sides. It would give you the same look, but with a seamless bottom to the bag.

Make the front, bottom, back and flap from one piece.
But make the sides from separate pieces.

If you have 90o angles the bottom of the bag will be flat, if you round the bottom corners the sewing will be easier, but the bag will be rounded at the bottom too.

Sew the strap in with the seem that connect the back to the sides and it will be very strong.

Not primitive at all but it works great.

Long time it was a thread about this kind of bags. If I remeber correct they was made of JeffH. I bought one leather Shepherd“s bag from him. It“s really nice and I used it many times.
Now I can not find the tread anywhere.
Shall I make a Photo of my bag? I don“t know if I can download it or send it.. but I can make a try if“s worth it.

Ulrika,
When you have the picture in your computer you can attach it to a post.
Just look under where you type, there is a bar Attach.
It even allows you to search in your computer to find it.

There are at least 3 threads on bags for ammo, maybe more, but I could only find those that are not very usefull.
But worth searching the forum.

Ulrica,

I found some information about bags, including pictures; here is the list of links:

photo of WhipArtist's bag

photos of JeffH's bag

instructions for making a herrentasche (gentleman's bag)

Another pattern for the same kind of bag

The last two links are courtesy of Dravonk.  Anweisungen auf deutsch, but the pictures are international Cheesy

My apologies for the poor German... it's been many years since I studied it.

I make mine out of heavy canvas and i have two sides to them, but I was taught that they were called possibles bags. Mine are about 12 inches square.
