Atlatl wood  type
Jan 15th, 2007 at 11:00pm

any wood you would suggest that a Yank like myself could buy in one of our home depot's? And could you give me some good dementions on how long/wide, and were to put the knocking spike. Any help would be much appreciated.

For wood type, I would think any hardwood is better, pine can snap in two if you get frustrated and throw the atlatl down at the ground  Wink. An inch diameter should be good, and atlatls are usually 1 to 2 feet long. Nail the knocking spike about an inch down from the one end. You might want to drill the hole for the nail first so the wood doesn't split or just bind the end.

At your home depot, check out the oaks and maples. More contruction info later, but that should get you started Smiley

cool, ive actually been looking at poplar or maple. but i have tons of pine at my house. so i think i'll make a few test models out of pine and then go for the hard woods. but yeah if you could give me some proper dimentions or what you guys did, that would be awesome. you see, ive had experience with short ones, but i think its time to make a mid sized one.

oh yeah, one more thing, does bamboo work well for the darts
?

And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Awesome Resource! Thanks.

Yes, a good piece of bamboo will make a very nice dart.

I wouldn't be surprised if the pine suddenly fails during use. It dosn't take a whole lot to break a well-made at'latl (if you want a light design, of course), so it's quite possible that if there's a defect in the pine that it will break during even normal use.

How's it coming - which style are you thinking of?

I kind of winged it... Roll Eyes

It actually turned out very nice. I bound a peg to a grove i alled out for it and bound it and fitted it with gorrilla glue and a resen. its very tuff and transfers the force well. I havn't even bothered to put a counter weight on it yet. but once i find a stone that feels and looks right i'll slap it on... Tongue

...
Here is a picture of my atl atl...i think ive posted it before but here it is again.
Hope it works. Cheesy
Unfortunately I live in the desert so i am limited (NONE) on what materials i can use for darts. I heard that the bamboo family make great darts but i am having to use wood that i bought to make the atlatl out of...they fly okay...but i think that a bamboo dart would fly better.
Good luck!  Wink
