Slings in the Maciejowski Bible
Dec 16th, 2006 at 4:15am

The Maciejowski Bible (also called the "Morgan Bible"), an illustrated bible from the middle ages, contains several images of slingers in action. The images are of very good quality, and are often used as a source of information on medieval gear. Here are the top images showing slingers:

http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/maciejowski_images_28.htm Folio 28: David goes searching for stones and kills Goliath.
http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/maciejowski_images_42.htm Folio 42: In the top right image ("David sends a letter to Joab"), you can see a slinger with a blue shield being attacked with a spear while hurling a bullet. This image is important because it shows a slinger with a shield.

Very interesting.  Thanks for another great find.  It looks a bit like David's using a diagonal method, but it may be a stylized horizontal or underhand method.  I do think I may have seen these before, does anyone know if they have shown up on this site before?  Man, in the second link, that is one enormous axe the guy in the blue tower is using.

Here are more direct links to the pictures:

Thanks again for yet another discovery.

We've talked about these before somewhere, but I'll say it again... beautiful images.

And hey check it out! David is using one of my slings!  Cool

...

Ok, well maybe not, but that is either net or bias woven fabric... Doesn't it seem like the rest of the images are too detailed to just allow crosshatching as shading?

Actually it can also (argueably) show that the sling was in use for military purposes in 12th century France Smiley

The sling even appears in an image of a battle from the battle of Battle of Nájera (Navarrete), which took place in 1367:

The image itself is even younger. It comes from a fifteenth-century manuscript of Jean Froissart's Chronicles.
