I use sisal to produce twisted cords and then attach them to a leather pouch in the Chumash style.  This way you end up with a light and flexible, yet strong, sling.

Ok now that i have made three composite slings, The Sisal one I posted about, A toy sling made from cotton thread from where I work ( going to be a christmas present to my Boss) and now a Jute sling, I have one more question from a realitive novice.
Once you have the length you deire how do you work the ends of the strings so that they do not become unraveled.  What i did was to lace the two central treads through the pouch and tie thenm togather. Then I took standard whit glue and liberaly coated the resulting knot with it. I'm pretty sure that is not the best way to deal with this.
So any advice on this for a realitve new braider on this????
Thanks

What you did is just fine, but maybe not as satisfying as it can be.
There are already several threads on this forum with the knots you can use, depending on what kind of string you use.
Here are links to some.
(Sorry if you happen to see a link to my site a time or two too often.)

Thanks Willeke, I'll look at the links probably tomorrow.
I am looking for some thing a little more asethicly pleasing. I'm pretty sure what I did is fully functional. I'm just not too pleased with the result.
And no problem on using your site ")

to resolve stiffness i my natural fiber slings i simply wash them in normal hair conditioner by hand and to me that seems the easyest way to make pretty much any type of fiber nice and soft. this is my first post so if this is not news to you all i beg your forgiveness

Welcome to the site scavenger.  I like your method better, and  I haven't tried this one but it was the old way that things were done.  The amonia in urine is a fabric softener.  My mother remembers my grandmother in the second world war ( supplies were pretty short during the blockade)  using it in the penultimate rinse when washing sheets, apparantly they came out really soft and, after hanging on the washingl line to dry,  didn't smell.  From what I've just read online it is better to use stale urine ( two weeks )  as that has developed more amonia.  We still use this a lot.  As an aside,  to add to the list of things that you don't really want to know,  most washing up liquids contain pig urine and that is what we use for our plates and cutlery.
