half-Mechanized Staff Sling= Trebuchet?

I was thinking about building a trebuchet, and I realized it seems to just be a half-mechanized staff-sling; is that accurate?

Aren't trebuchets basically just staff slings with the staff attached to a pivot, maybe 1/3 from the bottom of the staff, and a weight attached to the short end?

So:

Is this an easy transformation to make? I mean, if that's all there is to turning a staff sling into a trebuchet, it ought to be simple to create some relatively massive trebs out of existing staff slings ( if you're in love with staffs like me!)

Hammilton,

You have the basic idea right.  The details, however, are rather picky.  Length of staff, length of cords, location of pivot, amount of weight, all affect the release.  If you look around, there are designs published by people that have experience, or you can start small and learn how to do it the way they got their experience: trial and error.

Here's a sample design:
http://www.ripcord.ws/plans/plans.html

Here's a whole site dedicated to trebs:
http://www.trebuchet.com/

And an article from Scientific American magazine on how it works:
http://www.deremilitari.org/resources/pdfs/trebuchet.pdf

Or if you are into online gaming and simulations, go design, build, and test one here:
http://www.globalspec.com/trebuchet/

OK, enough of this, I gotta go ... design a treb.  See ya!

Skip to page 36 when all the theories get too heavy.

Yes, a trebuchet is basically a staff sling with a counterweight instead of human power. On the other hand, an onager is a torsion powered staff sling. I guess the staff sling is the origin of most catapult designs. Only the power source differs.

ripcords site is mentined above. That site is generally and rightfully considered a goldmine. Start there  Wink
