just a question, but in winter time in the woods up north, when all the grass is dead would the bark of poplar trees and aspen bark attract squirrels or rabbits to the traps

     Buger,
A couple of weeks ago, I used a "live capture" Hava-heart trap ( a commecially manufactured "box trap," made of heavy guage steel wire ) to catch one of these damned squirrels that I've been having problems with. For bait, I used a BAGEL.   Grin  It worked like a charm!

Peanut butter seems to be a universal bait. Even the carnivores love it.

Ah, so that is what you are talking about.
Beech nuts, or any other nut is good for traps. Just look at what they eat.

You may be limited to using traps without bait, ie, placing them along game trails. Pretty much any trap can be used without bait. You'll just have to set them up with the idea in mind that the animal will have to trigger it accidentally rather than tugging on something to eat. I've seen plenty of figure 4 dead falls used without bait. The trigger bar was set accross the trail or a tripline was attatched to it.
