Is your overhand pitch the same as the figure-8
*? It took me several months to learn the figure-8. I have learned around ten different styles, and this was the hardest to get right. I could not get the figure-8 to work at all for a long time. The only reason I kept at it, was that several other people said that they had no luck, no luck, no luck, and suddenly it worked. So I kept at it until ... yup, suddenly it worked. I wasn't accurate, but at least I wasn't throwing wild or hitting myself anymore.
Just keep working at it, accuracy takes time. I'm still not that good, and I've been slinging for two years.
Of course, if your style is something different from figure-8, then my advice won't help much...
