Currently there are 34 sites in England alone that have slingstoes, either stone, clay or lead. A comlete list is found in W B Griffiths  The sling and its place in the Roman Imperial army.

I didn't quite believe the 'acorns' either. There was little information on the display, but they do come from a Roman fort in Scotland.

Given 'glans' = 'acorn' it almost seemed like a Roman with a sense of humor.

- If you could sling it properly, would it be that bad? Probably cup end first?

Ask not what you can do for your sling... But what your sling can do to an armored knight on horseback at over 50 yards! Shocked

Wanderer,

I have slung freshly-fallen acorns, they fly quite well with or without the cap.  I've tried cap-first and point-first, it doesn't seem to make a difference.  Of course, they fly best when I get a rifle-spin on them, worst when they spin sideways.
