Museum Collections
Sep 27th, 2006 at 3:51am

It seems that many museum arms collections deal with later weaponry, particularly bladed weapons, armor, and firearms.  I'd like to start a list of museum arms collections that deal with ancient weapons, which of course would include the sling, and perhaps recreations of ancient weapons as well.

Petrie museum in London, has an Egyptian sling and lead glande

Hedeby Museum in Denmark has the 2 8th cent. Viking slings

Copenhagen Museum in Denmark has samples of slingstones

It seems every little local museum in Britain has some sling stones in it. Give me time to check them.

     Slingers!
For anyone in the New England area, The Higgins Armoury Museum is a must see. This is a superb collection of arms and armor in Worcester, Massachusetts. The history of this museum is especially interesting, as the entire collection was once the private property of John Woodman Higgins, an industrialist whose family owned Worcester Pressteel during WWII.

If the folks over on the Cestrosphendon thread succeed in producing the real thing, which museum would most likely be interested in putting a recreation of the device on display?

Any sling stones that look like little footballs?  When I was a kid, a friend who had lived on Guam had a football-shaped stone he brought from there.

Cissbury ring in Northern England has examples of sling stones.

Pathos district museum in Cyprus has the same.

The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow has a number of slingstones and lead projectiles.

There is a picture of some of these at
http://www.exploratio.org/image_database/weapons/IMGP2511.jpg

The lead 'acorns' are complete with the cups! These are described as being 'on loan'. So.. which way around would you launch them?

Apparently they also have some slings from the South Pacific, but these were not on display.
