crazy bow idea
Sep 17th, 2006 at 4:05pm

I'm in the process of building a very traditional "board" bow of red oak.  Just got the rough material removal done, and about ready to start the "tillering" process.

While hunting for a hunk of leather at the local Goodwill store (to make a bow stringer), I spotted something that gave me an idea....Golf clubs.

They had stacks of clubs with tapered steel shafts, all for about 3 bucks apiece.   How about:
Buy two identical clubs.
Cut the heads off, and remove the grip material.
Find a suitable aluminum tube, and insert the handle end of the clubs in same. (would need to be a tight fit)
if you leave enough material on the shaft from the head end, it looks like you could cut nocks into that.
Apply a string.

The steel shafts are quite flexible, tapered nicely, and should stand some abuse.    Would it work?

Steel bows have been used from historic times for crossbows, but would be rather heavy for a regular bow.

I have seen commercial jobs with steel limbs, mostly of the take-down recurve style.

Since the tubing is hollow, weight should not be a big problem.  I may blow the six bucks and give it a try.

I wouldn't spend the money...

Even if it is elastic enough, there is no escaping that steel is heavy. It would be far from efficient, and since a hatchet could make a much better bow in half of the time, no point...

It wouldnt work. If you even managed to string it, it would break anyway. A round cross section for steel doesn't work out too well. It would shatter and you would get steel splinters into your eyes.

How about this crazy bow idea?  It borrows your arm for a crossbow stock.....

...

It only weighs 2.5lbs and can put 'em out there at over 300fps!

Overpriced though.......(aren't they all).

I'd say get a Bingham kit and go from there.....

Who knows what you might come up with!
