while at lunch with my grandpa yesterday, i learned that he played with slings as a kid. he described how they were made, but he was unclear, so i will have to try to get it out of him another day.
but until then, here is some food for thought:
he said that they (the kids that he used to play with) used to use a wooden stick and sharpen it on both ends and load it into the sling and see who could get them to stick in the ground.
that is all he said, and it sounds like an interesting game. has anyone ever played this before?
i have some more information about peggy that i found out today when i was hanging out with my grandpa. the peg was about 1 inch thick and about 6 inches long. he says they would use oak if they could.
when i asked how he threw with the sling, he showed me the underarm style.
not related:
he was telling me about how when he was in the navy he went to some place and the natives would jump up in the trees and get coconuts for you. he also said that if you gave a native a t-shirt, then they would make for you rings or toothbrushes (don't ask me how
) or they would give you crabs and coconuts. this was about 60 years ago though, so they probably would be more modern by now
