here is a site with some slingers on it (about half way down)
www.skidmore.edu/.../TibetanPhotos/Nomads.html
they are nice pictures, and show natice peoples using slings. they would possibly make nice additions to the gallery if chris would like to seek permission for the use of them. what do you think?

Siguy,
Thanks for bringing those pictures to our attention. Because the clothing is so voluminous it is difficult to see what these people are wearing at their belts, but at least two of the pictures clearly show
swords being worn. Also note that at least one of the slingers has a very long sling ( or so it seems to me, but I use a rather short sling. )
Interesting stuff!
Zwiebeltuete, thanks for getting those links back for us! .......Dan

Cool pictures Siguy!
It says it was an article about it in National Geographic? Which one was that that? If it isn't before 1965, then I should have it.
Good job, Zwiebeltuete!

One of these days I'll head down to Tibet and meet those slingers in person!
A new rail road just opened there connecting Tibet and mainland China last week. I'd have gone by now but as far as I know two passengers have died on the train already due to high altitude sickness and no stops in between
.

Wow - according to popular belief: do you think he's going for distance or accuracy?

those guys look like they could go for distance and accuracy in the same shot.
but according to what we have pretty much determined in the forum is that the guy with the longer sling is probably going for distance and the guy with the shorter sling is probably going for accuracy.
but also what we know of shepherd and nomadic type peoples like those depicted usually says that they are going for accuracy, either to scare an animal back into the herd or to kill a predator.
perhaps it is really possible to acheive good accuracy with an exponentially long sling. ???
