The first reference to slings I ever read ( and what got me interested) is in  Lion Of Ireland, by Morgan Llewellyn.
It is a semi-fictional,histoically based story of Brian Boru, King of all Ireland. In one of his first battles, when just a teenager, he sees the power of massed slings in a battle against Vikings.

And they mention them some in the 4 books in The Emporer Quartet. They followJuilius Ceaser from a young boy untill his death.

In Steven Pressfield's "Tides of War", he writes about a greek army fighting the spartan forces in one battle, and the spartans' allied slingers facing off from an eighth of a mile away and "the first stones began to chew divots at our feet and then began to clatter around us like hail"
