Photo Experiment

Hello Everyone,

I was thinking about projectiles, actually I was dreaming about them in my sleep; I suppose that's what you get when you work on a project like Goliath. Anyway back to that I was thinking about.

We have video of people slinging and we have photo's of people slinging but we don't actually have any photo's of the projectile leaving  the pouch or even of the movement of the projectiles as they leave the pouch. (Not to mention that might just change the way we view things)

Anyway I had this idea, stop me if this has been done.

With highspeed photography (You know mythbusters style) you can watch something come out of the sling and what rotation its on. Now I know this is probably beyond most of us, but we all have connections and we all know people. I think it would be an interesting project to see if we could get it organised to actually use this kind of technology to review and understand how a sling works on a scientific level. We've done the math but it would be nice to see it in action.

And no, High speed photography, though cool, is not at all what we need. A regular camera does the trick, if you know it's shutter speed, and makes some funky pics.

After you obtain more experience with the sling, you may come to realize the nuances of spin as applied to the trajectory of the rocks leaving your sling....similar to the accomplished golfer who knows the moment the ball leaves the tee which way it will be taken by the orientation of it's spin axis.

High speed photography would serve to confirm what the mind's eye will have already perceived and analyzed.

CanDo,

I'll talk to my photography friends and see what I can come up with. Though I think my skill at slinging may not be as good as some of you here on the list.

Techstuf,

The aim here is to enhance everyone's awareness, even those highly skilled people that may think they know what's going on, in the sports university here in Australia they have shown that this kind of technology can help people out and improve their skills even further.

So back on subject yes a good camera could do this. Does anyone know someone with a camera that good?
Is someone apart from me willing to help out. The more data we have the more accurate the detail. That's what Experiments are about repeatable proof.

So here's my challenge to you all, Tomorrow I am going to do my talk on slinging, then I am going to attempt my first proof of concept about the photo experiment. Lets see who here on the list can get a better more accurate set of photos and data for the wiki then me.

Certainly nothing wrong with that!  Although, just like a golf ball, a rock will slice, hook, nose dive and loft.....all of which accurately indicate what is occurring such that design changes can be made in order to accomplish consistent, precision casts.

I would guess that for most skilled slingers, high speed photography would simply confirm the obvious.

But have at it mate....It would certainly be entertaining to see slow-mo footage of a power cast!

Techstuf,

Yes it would be cool and should be one of the reasons we should do it.

Time for an update:

Have finished my talk and given away three slings hopefull that will be a good return investment.

I talked to one of my photographic friends he had a digital LSR that could get down to 15 one hundreths of a second, so after the talk I spent most of my afternoon slinging tennis balls to see what I could get comming out of the pouch.  I have the pictures but have to sort through them and see which are worth posting.

Also pulled a muscle in my lower back but you get that.

Too tired to post now will do later, working on getting a flim guy I know to do the slow motion stuff though this may be a big ask.

nightweave out.

Finally up loaded the picture somewhere.

Warning I didn't crop these they are about 1 meg each.

These are the best of the photo's also put one in where it just goes to show, don't stuff up or you will get caught on film.

Most of them have me either at release or the ball has left the pouch.

Ok for all those who wanted to see the stuff up

Back to it. This is where my photo guy started working hard

As you can see there is some interesting stuff there including sling movement.

Will try again this time with more of an eye on the projectile. I have plans for working my way up to lead bullets, sinkers, acorn shaped, etc. That will take time.

Enjoy.

You have a pretty consistent throw! Not bad for a mishmash of frames...

We need to get you working on a backspin release as well. Your photos show "classic" tennis ball topspin - cool. I'd love to see properly captured stop-motion/stroboscopic images of a throw. Frame rates of 50+ fps are probably desirable through in order to cature the last bit of release. The only way it seems possible to me with consumer-grade equipment is using stroboscopic flash on a digital SLR. Any chance your friend has some higher end flashes for his camera?  Wink
