Does anyone use Finger rings or other gripers

Hello Everyone,

As the questions says do you use a finger ring or gripper with you sling if so why?

What does it do for you?

And last but not least has it changed the way you sling?

In that order.

no- a release knot and a finger loop on the little finger are all that's required. anything else is gilding the lily. a balaeric sling doesn't even need a release knot, as long as the release cord extends across the palm.
are there any ancient hand-grips in museums? are they depicted in ancient art?  the answer is no to both - in that order.

We are not only witnesses to history we are all participants in it.

I have used the following methods of hanging onto my slings:
(1) finger loop
(2) double finger loop
(3) fingerlooplooploop (TechStuf's grip that has three leather loops on the retained cord)
(4) wrist strap

I have one sling that I designed for heavy loads, with a wrist strap that is actually a leather bracelet 2 inches (5 cm) wide.  It can be used with narrow (close) or wide (open) grips, just by changing which fingers the retained cord runs between.  My fingerlooplooploop grip is also intended for heavy loads.  It works quite well, and also keeps my fingers a bit warmer in winter.  Of course, it can only be used with a narrow grip. The double fingerloop slings have the advantage that I can put both loops on one finger, or one loop on each of two fingers.  Either way distributes the stress and makes it easier to sling hard without pain.  This one is becoming my favorite grip.

Different grips have little effect on my slinging.  I just do whichever slinging style I feel like working on.

Not strictly true... I'm still trying to track down a decent description of an artifact from the Canadian arctic that is listed as a "sling handle". You might imagine that environment and available materials would influence ancient (or at least primitive) sling design in much the same way it does modern efforts. Thin twines, or sinew cords might necessitate sleeving the grip end, or using toggles. Many of us here have experimented with rigid grips instead of finger loops.

My first decade of slinging was "wrap around the fingers" only. I didn't start making finger loops (still using  the same "through the palm" grip) until I came here!

That would be great if you could do that Matthais and if you do would you be interested in doing a re-construction for the wiki?

very interesting.  it might have been useful when slinging in cold climates with gloves on.  (if it IS a sling handle!)

it's a kind of a fingerless mitten  ( a good example of convergent evolution Cheesy)

maybe the handgrip did exist, as one-offs or for special environments. it exists today amongst the hobbyists and talented craftsmen on this forum, who aren't slinging for their food or in war.

the satisfaction of making a handgrip must make it worthwhile to some forum members. there have been some clever and beautiful designs posted.  but whether soldiers or hunters in the past felt the same is a different matter -  there is an absence of grips in virtually all depictions, descriptions and specimens.

but vive la difference!

I was sort of thinking about changing it, but I figured that we'd have a griper along soon enough...
