Is a sport, the shot with sling?
Jul 28th, 2004 at 5:38am

Some history.

About 27 years ago, a group of lovers of the shot with sling of the Balearic Islands, we meet to elaborate a regulation that regulated the shot with sling.

That regulation was presented to the Spanish authorities that  authorized it and the federation the shot with sling was born,  with the same rights and obligations that the football (soccer in USA), basketball, swimming, shot with arch, etc. etc. etc.

Some years later this regulation was delivered to the international olympic committee.

Therefore, the shot with sling if that is properly accepted as a sport, so much for the Spanish authorities, how for the international olympic committee

Vicente,

That is very interesting. We often speak on the forum of making the sling an Olympic game. It sounds like you know the way to present it to the Olympic Commitee. How would us slingers in the other nations ask the Olympic commitee to make it an Olympic game?

If you have the name of a person and where to sent a letter, I would love to tell them know that I would like it to be in the Olympic games

David.

Vicente,

You have made a great good job, indeed. I'm curious how many people is gathered in your federation. I imagine that slinging is very popular on the Balearic Islands. I watched some pictures on your websites, saw the special target in a school and children playing with slings.

I hope to visit your beautiful islands someday. If so, I will not omit your federation, for sure.

Greetings,

Jurek

In the shape, structure and position of each stone, there is recorded a small piece of history. So, slinging them, we add a bit of our history to them.

David,

When the Balearic federation of shot with sling gave the regulation to the international olympic committee, the president was the spanish Juan Antonio Samaranch, at the moment I ignore if he continues inside the olympic committee.

Anyway I think that you can write to the committee if you wants it, by mail or maybe for email

Vicente

Hola Jurek,

In these moments we have 235 slingers with federative license that they throw with stone, corresponding to the three categories, men, women and children.

There are also more than a thousand children in all the schools that also practice the shot with sling with tennis balls, every year we make the "school championship" of shot with sling, arriving to the final phase near 300 children, among which the champions leave in the different categories .

In the shot competitions with stone, where it can only participate slingers with license, we have about 40/50 slingers for each competition, since it is of free inscription.

Greetings,
Vicente

mgreenfield,

Right now I am not very sure, but I think that it is necessary to live in the Balearic Islands, to pay the quota, and to participate in the competitions.

Vicente

Hi, folks!

As I've written before, maybe I will visit Spain next year. I'll probably stay in Santiago deCompostela, in Galicia, as I have spanish friends living there, but I'll urely visit Balearic Islands, in order to meet Mateo Caņellas and the other slingers personally!
It would be a nice opportunity for us to meet, wouldn't it? Smiley
Things here in our web page are really increasing, and as the majority of the members live in USA, promoting a meeting in this country will be very nice... I never went to Europe, but I know some USA cities, as I travelled there when I was much younger. USA has really beautiful places too, unfortunately most people here from Brasil only visit New York and Miami, which are nice places too, but I would love to know other places such North Carolina,  I've heard it is a beautiful place.
Concerning sling throwing become a olympic sport, maybe someday... this would be really great, we must remember that our sport is cheap, difficult to master but easy to begin to practise, and that we only need some rustic material and stones... I can imagine some International Industries trying to invent some "extra- super-excellent-ultra" slings Grin Grin Grin in order to comercialize it... and some of us, just with simple home made slings, beating the one's with the poch ones... Wink

I think the greatest thing about the sling is it's international presence.  Slings have been found or documented on every continent except Australia and Antarctica (anyone know otherwise?).  Sounds like the perfect olympic sport to me.  Far more universal than something like basketball.

Returning on this topic and how consequence of this question, desire to tell them that the staff of the Balearic federation, has decided to grant a federative license for nonresident in Balearic.

Those slingers of this forum that are interested in obtaining this license, will should they sent an email to licencias@tirdefona.com indicating:

Name and last names
year of birth
residence city
besides the necessary data for the shipment by mail.

this license will have an approximate cost to the 30 euros / dollars that it includes the shipping and handling to any country of the world.

Greetings,
Vicente

Zorro,

The license  is valid a lifetime.

It is only obligatory to participate in the competitions that the FBTF (Federaciō Balear Tir de Fona) organizes.

Those slingers that participate in official competitions organized by the FBTF, every year they have to pay the quota that is to cover the insurance in the event of lesion or accident.

As orientation this year 2004, this quota is 15 euros, but I insist alone they should pay it those that participate in official competitions organized by the FBTF

Greetings,
Vicente
